CYBER ABUSE

By Sana Soleman Elmansouri

Harvard computer science student Mark Zuckerberg, along with his peers, Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes seem to have forgotten a very important issue when they came up with their amazing idea of a social network. They overlooked the fact that this world contains many foolish, racist and ignorant people that have no sense of respect for life, others, or even themselves. If you were to visit any social premises, such as a restaurant or a park, any of these irresponsible or ignorant people that you may have the misfortune of coming across would find it impossible to have any kind of access to your private life. In most cases, they wouldn’t dare to spit any abuse, or send any kind of vulgar comments your way, for when you meet these types of people face-to-face; they tend to shy away, like the cowards that they are. Many of them have low self-esteem and have many issues of there own, and the only coping mechanism that they know of is to be rude and disrespectful to those that are talented, clever or seem even remotely happy. Well, Facebook is the medium for them.

Some vile human-beings take part in the abuse that occurs on many social networking sites, not just Facebook, easily hide behind their fake names and fake pictures in a way that they can’t in real life. The police are available on the streets to stop criminals but a ‘report abuse’ button, is just not enough. These people can still continue to commit cyber-crimes. To conclude, Mr Mark Zuckerberg, and your talented companions have missed a spot. Sadly, instead of inventing some thing exceedingly spectacular, that could have made this world a more beautiful and interesting place, you seem to have invented another tool for the evil to use against the innocent. Not only that, but you have allowed many people who are socially incompetent, to make these fake accounts and hide behind a computer screen whilst typing words of hate, just because they are bitter, just because they can.
